A cottage built for July and later insulated, sealed and heated year-round is the classic ice-dam building. Will a metal roof fix the ice dams on our converted cottage?
It will reduce them and it will not fix them. A metal roof sheds snow, and snow that has left the roof cannot melt on it, so there is less fuel and the dams get smaller. The cause is heat escaping into the roof assembly from a conversion whose insulation and ventilation were retrofitted, and no roofing material changes that.
